Haven't been

Haven't been to the lake in a while. Went to Hefner a couple weeks ago, it was cold but at least the wind was not bad. Spent a good 2-3 hours fishing along the dam. Trolled some crankbaits hoping to come up with a Walleye but no luck. Fished the dam, the lighthouse, and the marina near the lighthouse for large and/or smallmouths and didn't turn up anything. Didn't even get a hit the entire time we fished. Better luck next time.

Thunderbird 10/31 & 11/1

Went to Thunderbird on Fri and Sat. Friday the lake was covered with birds and the sand bass were exploding on top all over the lake for about 2 hours in the evening. On Sat there were not many birds on the water at all and the sand bass didn't repeat the top action like they did the evening before. Water temp was 67.

Hefner yesterday

Trolled around on hefner yesterday for a while without any luck. Decided to see if we could stir up a largemouth. Caught one small chunk on a plastic craw. It was pretty windy so we went back to trolling, picked up several sandbass, only one big enough to fillet.

Thunderbird

Spent the afternoon and evening on Thunderbird. Did some trolling and fished several brush piles. Had 2 crappie big enough to eat but that was about it.

Thunderbird

Went to Thunderbird yeserday. We trolled around for quite a while and even tried a little bass fishing. Ended up catching a few small sandies. Had one crappie and one saugeye big enough to keep.

Getting Cold

I haven't had a chance to do much fishing lately, been foggy and cold plus I've had some work to do the last week but I hope to be on Hefner and Thunderbird again soon to find some Walleye and Saugeye.

Thunderbird Yesterday

Went to Thunderbird yesterday, turned out to be a good day. Had 7 sandies and 3 crappie big enough to eat. Caught several small ones as well. Turned up 2 saugeye but they were not big enough to keep.

Okemah yesterday, Hefner today

Went to Okemah yesterday, turned out good. Biggest fish was 4.5 and had a few that were 3'ish also, caught a few around the 2 mark. Would have been a good stringer for a tourny.

Today, went to Hefner, it was a little rough, front came in and wind changed to the North. We didn't pick up anything other than a couple of bluegill.

Rough day yesterday

Day started out like any normal day, went to Hefner in the morning and didn't do any good, I wasn't there for long when Anthony called and we decided to go to Bell Cow. Got to Bell Cow and had a flat on one of the trailer tires, we fished for a while and didn't do any good, the lake looked a few feet low. After having to buy a new tire we decided to head to Thunderbird since the wind was low and we didn't have anything else to do. We got to Thunderbird and it was tough, sat on a brush pile for a little while and caught several small crappie then decided to go look around for sandies, didn't see anything worth while. At the end of the day we started bass fishing and picked up a few small ones and one that was 16" long, not a bad fish, but for a day of 3 lakes and lots of traveling it was not a good day at all.

Hefner this morning

Went to Hefner this morning just after daylight. Wind was calm and it was clear out. Trolled along the dam for a bit but didn't turn anything up. Anthony caught a big bluegill on a topwater and a small bass on a rattletrap. I fished around the lighthouse point and didn't turn up anything there either.

I talked with a guy, Tom, at the boat ramp he was loading out the same time I was, he said Chickasha lake has been good for sandies lately, I may try that out since I haven't fished that lake.

Hefner today

Spent the middle of the day on Hefner today, didn't do very good today, there was no wind and we were trying to fish the dam for smallmouth but these small knats were everywhere. Normally this wouldn't bother me but there were millions of them and they were getting in our eyes, ears, inside your shirt everything. Was very annoying.

Anthony caught a small bass and I mean no longer than his lure small. I caught one small crappie on a small spinnerbait. Maybe next time.

More Okemah goodness

Went to Okemah yesterday and did pretty well, especially since we got there right after a tournament ended and they had a big tournament the day before. We were able to catch several small ones, had one that was 2.5 lbs, one 3 lbs, and one 5 lbs. Turned out to be a good day.

I'm still here

I've been neglecting making posts lately and I'm making an effort to be more active with posting.

Thursday I went fishing with Dad on Oolagah lake and it was tough, we tried Bass, Sandbass, and Crappie. The lake appears to be turning over, the water level was 3ft high and falling and the water temps are cooling now that fall is taking hold. Not exactly the best conditions however, we were able to pull some very nice slab crappie out of some brush piles. Oolagah is full of monster crappie. We fished from about noon until around 5:30. We had to work for the fish we caught but ended up with 1 sandbass and about 5 big crappie.

Friday we went back to Oolagah at the crack of dawn and attempted Bass, Sandbass, and Crappie again. This time we were not able to turn up anything worth keeping. We were not even able to get a Bass to strike. Trolled for Sandbass to no avail and hit the brush piles again but only turned up a few small crappie.

No hope for Hefner

Haven't been updating lately, been spending a lot of time fishing on Okemah lake and I don't get home until late. Okemah is by far the best Bass lake I've been fishing, always produces and has turned out some good ones.

Went to Lake Hefner the other day and again today, caught a 16" bass off the dam the other day and today didn't produce anything. Did see the sandies surface but could not get them to hit anything. Once again Hefner didn't produce. If the lake wasn't so close I would have written it off a long time ago but since it's so close I guess I'll continue to get punished by it.

Okemah again

Went to Okemah again yesterday and once again in produced some fish. One fish was in the 3lbs range but didn't get it landed, threw the lure right at the boat. The others were all smaller fish in the 14" range.

Okemah has a slot limit which is why it's been such a good producer. Anything between 15" and 22" has to be released.

Okemah produces

Went to Okemah yesterday evening. Didn't have a lot of time to fish but it did produce 2 fish. One 3 1/4 and one 3 1/2. Had a few others hit but didn't get a hook in them.

Hefner finally gives me a little hope

Finally caught a nice fish out of Lake Hefner. It was the only fish of the day but it was a nice relief from getting nothing of any notability from this lake ever. Was a 3-3.5 lbs bass, hit real light on a plastic.

Speaking of plastics, be prepared to lose a lot of them when fishing the rip rap at Lake Hefner.

Skunked again by Lake Hefner

Got on the lake today at about 2pm and stayed until I saw lightning to the south. We are supposed to have some nasty storms for the next few days. I didn't catch a thing, I also went out on the lake yesterday from about 3pm until dark and didn't catch anything. Lake Hefner has turned out to be a huge challenge for me. I've heard so many good things about the lake regarding Walleye, Crappie, and Smallmouth Bass but I have yet to have a good day on Lake Hefner.

Thuderbird on a Saturday

Fishing lake Thunderbird on a weekend is a big mistake. That lake had so many boats on it the lake was sloshing like a bathtub. The 15+ mph south wind wasn't any help either. So, Thunderbird has officially been declared a weekday only lake in my book.

Despite the terrible condition we were able to pick up several small sandbass, a small saugeye, a 6 lbs. drum, and a channel cat about 1.5-2 lbs. No bass on that trip.

Friday, August 8, 2008

Finally a good day

Nothing big today but it was a nice day regardless. We took another trip to Thunderbird and were able to catch several small sandbass, one keeper saugeye, and a couple small bass. Also pulled a few small crappie out of a couple brush piles.

So far I've been very impressed with Thunderbird, it has been a producer of both quantity and quality.

Happy B-day to me

Well today is my birthday and the boat is in commission so I decided I was going to spend the entire day fishing even if it killed me. In the morning I went to Lake Hefner and marked a lot of fish on the locater at about 15-20ft. I dropped a marker buoy and tried to get one on a spoon. Caught a fish but it was on my new rod and reel so I didn't have the drag set and he got off, have no idea what he was, I'm thinking it was a small walleye.

Came home at around noon and got something to eat then Anthony and I decided we were going to try out Lake Thunderbird since neither of us had been there. He had his daughter for the day so we took her along. Fished until almost dark and caught 2 fish. I had a small one that was maybe a pound then things went dry for a while and Anthony hooked a really nice fish, weighed just over 4 3/4 lbs. Nice one! Overall it was a good birthday, wish we could have caught more but it was good regardless.

Hefner at the crack of dawn

Hit Hefner lake this morning at the crack of dawn. Didn't land anything but did hook into a small bass for a minute. Had a wiring issue and had to come back to the ramp and work on it. Took about an hour to get things going again, of course, it was during the best part of the day but got to go nonetheless. Stayed out as long as we could stand it, the 100+ degree heat sure makes it tough.

Back in business

Got a new trolling motor and mounted it on the boat this morning, however, the 106 degree heat kept me off the lake and it looks like there isn't going to be any relief until late in the week. Hopefully I'll get a chance to hit the water and catch some fish.

Went with my father last Friday to an undisclosed location looking for sandbass but no luck, they just were not doing their thing. We were able to catch several bass on topwaters though, had 3 of them that were over 2lbs and a ton of little ones. It was a lot of fun but man it was hot.

Still out of commission

Well, still out of commission on the fishing front, I have been visiting Hefner occasionally and just fishing from the bank but I haven't caught anything worth mentioning. I did go at daybreak a couple days ago and saw 3 fish hitting on top right off the dam but was not able to catch anything.

Hefner from the bank

Boat is still out of commission but hopefully not for much longer. I went to Hefner and fished from the bank a few times the last couple days. I went day before yesterday and caught a nice sized Bluegill and last night Anthony and I went off the dam now that they have reopened it. I didn't catch anything but Anthony caught a small bass.

Haven't been

The boat is still out of commission and the other day I had my 2 bait-casting rigs stolen out of the back of my pickup along with some other stuff. Sucks, but I didn't make it very difficult for the thief to get them so I just have to choke this lesson down and try to recoup my losses.

I did go fish a couple farm ponds, I haven't had much luck with these ponds but I was able to catch two fish, one about 12-13" and the other was a tiny 4". Caught them on a black and purple worm fishing on the bottom very, very, slow. I had several hits but I'm assuming they were all small.

Sportsman's Lake (Seminole)

Went to Sportsman's lake yesterday (6/22). Got to the lake around 3:30'ish and fished until almost dark. We didn't do any good, could catch Bluegill all day on a small jig throwing at the bank but that was about it.

My trolling motor quit on me so we didn't get to fish the hour before dark and this will put me out of commission as far as fishing from the boat for a while.

Lake Hefner fishing

Went to lake Hefner yesterday, it was mostly cloudy a good part of the day and the temp was in the low 90's. The water surface temp was in the mid 80's.

We got on the lake about 3pm and fishing until just before dark. We started trying out the walleye action to see if we could catch us a few big enough to eat but we didn't turn up anything.

We then started Bass fishing on the S side of the lake on the shores around the golf course and didn't turn up anything. We decided to try out some smallmouth and went over to the marinas around the restaurants on the E side of the lake. Anthony, my fishing partner, was able to hang a nice fish but it jumped and threw his lure. He was able to land 1 small largemouth and 1 small smallmouth along with a small bluegill. The only think I was able to hook into was a small bluegill.

I've been wanting to complete what I call the "Grand Slam" of Oklahoma game fish where I catch every game fish in the state. So far there are only 2 fish that I have yet to catch to complete my goal, the smallmouth bass and trout. I'm not counting trout since they are a baitfish in my book, haha.

Sportsman's Lake (Seminole)

Went to Sportsman's Lake yesterday, it was very windy and we took a boat with only a trolling motor for power and needless to say it wasn't enough to hold us against the wind. We found a small cove that we could fish around in and stay out of the wind but that really limited us.

At about 8pm'ish the wind broke and allowed us to get out of our cove and fish around. We only caught one fish but it was a good one. 4.25 lbs bass. That was the only fish and caught him on a windy point about 6ft deep on a purple worm.
